There’s a reason behind the nickname ‘Footy Dean’ and the Eels playmaker lived up to his moniker and delivered arguably his best NRL performance in the absence of Mitchell Moses in Round 12.
Dean Hawkins joined Parramatta from the Rabbitohs ahead of the 2025 season, joining Ronald Volkman in a race to be Moses’ deputy halfback.
The 26-year-old leapfrogged Volkman in Round 3 and well and truly found his groove in a win over the Sea Eagles on Friday.
He recorded four try assists and a further try contribution, taking out the Westpac Red Zone MVP Leaderboard and living up to his ‘Footy Dean’ moniker.
That nickname stems from a YouTube channel Hawkins created by the same name when he was a 10-year-old which depicted him tackling his brother Brent and various other rugby league related trick shots.
Once his teammates at the Rabbitohs found the hidden footage the username caught on like wildfire in the rugby league world.
Elsewhere, Roosters young gun Hugo Savala also delivered a mammoth performance with a Red Zone rating of four to down the Sharks.
