Queensland has claimed under-19 State of Origin bragging rights for the first time, overcoming the loss of a Broncos young gun and a second-half surge from New South Wales with a late winner on the Sunshine Coast.
The Maroons had never won an under-19 Origin match in three attempts, and in the previous incarnation of the format across the 2010s, won just one of the eight under-20 matches in 2018 when Jake Clifford starred.
But Coby Black, who is touted as a future Broncos playmaker as he impresses at Queensland Cup level, was critical setting up the game on route to a drought-breaking 23-22 win on the Sunshine Coast.

The Maroons had to come back without Black though, after he was ruled out following a second-half HIA.
Down 17-22 with six minutes to play, Sharks prospect Prestyn Laine-Sietu scored before the Titans’ Javon Andrews – replacing Black – made a difficult kick which proved the game-winner.
Titans young gun Cooper Bai and Zac Garton crossed inside the first 20 minutes to give the Maroons a 12-0 lead before fancied Dragons prospect Jacob Halangahu gave the Blues their first try of the night.
Then after slotting two conversations and a one-point field goal in the opening half, Black crossed just past halftime and extended the Queensland lead.
Cyrus Stanley-Traill then made things interesting and got the Blues back within five points with 20 minutes remaining, before Cody Hopwood and Jaxson Allen added tries as well.
Potential future Knights fullback Connor Votano slotted three of four conversions for the night but the one miss allowed the Maroons to make their late comeback.
Earlier in the night NSW won the women’s U-19 Origin clash 26-10, with 2024 NRLW Dally M Rookie of the Year Kasey Reh named player of the match for the second straight year.
